Different Types of Narratives Used in Movies and TV

narratives

Narratives in movies and TV are used to convey a message or story. It is actually a storytelling device. It is a type of writing that consists of a series of events, settings, people, and details that tell a story in some form. In film and television, it usually consists of one main character who is seen or heard speaking (sometimes only through narration or dialogue). In some cases, it may also involve multiple characters talking to each other either directly or indirectly.

Narrative writing is a genre of writing in which the author tells stories through a narrative structure. The pieces can be long and can include characters, settings, or events. It often explores themes of psychology and human experience with an emphasis on social change or progress.

In American English, the narrative has become a style of writing that shares many similarities with poetry. This is especially true in terms of its use of language; narrative writing can employ an open or closed style. However, it should be noted that different types of narratives do not necessarily fall into one category of writing compared to another.

Types of Narrative Writing

The narrative writing is a very useful skill because it can help to develop language, narrative and figurative thinking. As well as this, it will help you to explore vividness of description and concrete thoughts in essays. There are multiple ways to write a narrative, but each has an impact on your audience.

Linear Narrative

A linear narrative has the events in the story told in a chronological order. This can help you understand both your own and other people’s stories — and help you remember details like what happened at each event. One example of this is a book’s sequential timeline: each chapter follows the next, even if they’re set years apart. In other words, with a linear narrative, you learn each day of the week based on its proximity in time to the previous day. A linear narrative can be broken down into five main parts – introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement.

Quest narrative and historical narrative are similar or other words for linear narrative.

Nonlinear Narrative

Non-linear narratives tell their stories in a different order from a linear narrative. A non-linear narrative can help create emotions and perspectives that are difficult to convey by using only chronological events. You can use this method for emphasis on important scenes, or scenes that do not fit into your narrative’s expected format. For example, you may want to include a scene at the beginning of your story that shows where the character is coming from before they begin their journey toward the end goal of the story.

Viewpoint Narrative

A narrative perspective is a way to convey thoughts and experiences in the voice of a narrator who doesn’t have direct access to the events that are happening. A narrative point of view is used in many types of writing, but you’ll find it most often in stories with a strong character development theme—and especially in those written from the point of view of a single protagonist.

Descriptive Narrative

In a descriptive narrative, the story’s focus is on how stories are set, characters, and objects look and feel. The goal here is total immersion in the story; this is different from how a viewpoint narrative strives to create immersion in a character’s inner world, a limited perspective on the world of the story.

Conclusion

In a world where people can choose what they read, watch or listen to, the only way to survive is to be an artist. You need to compel your audience and that’s the difference between narratives produced by professionals and those produced by amateurs.
